The Forensic Science Department accepts student applications through December 31 for enrollment in the fall semester only. All application materials must be completed and received before December 31 for consideration. Students who wish to submit materials or applications after the deadline should contact the Forensic Science Department directly at A holistic review of each student's application will be completed on a competitive basis.

Admission considerations include:

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited
    institution in chemistry or biology; or a bachelor's
    degree from a regionally accredited institution
    in a forensic or natural science with the equivalentForensic Science Student Working in Lab
    of a minor in either chemistry or biology

  • Test scores from the Graduate Record Examination
  • Three letters of recommendation, at least two from academic sources
  • Official transcripts of all academic work previously undertaken
  • TOEFL scores for international students

A number of undergraduate courses in chemistry and biology are helpful in pursuing a graduate degree in forensic science. For more information, read the model career path.

Note: In order to be more competitive, it is strongly recommended that students successfully complete Molecular Biology BEFORE the start of the fall semester they intend to apply.

As part of the criminal justice system, graduates of the Forensic Science Department are held to the same professional ethics as law enforcement and correctional officials.

Please note that all MSFS students are required to complete a 10-week, full-time internship at a crime laboratory.  Most students must complete a criminal background check as part of the placement process.
