The Master of Science in Forensic Science program requires the completion of 44 graduate semester hours of core and forensic science coursework that can be completed in two years. The program is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to forensic science. This unique and interdisciplinary program was the first of its kind in Texas.
The coursework includes a support sequence in biological sciences, chemistry, and criminal justice. Additional coursework in specialized areas of forensic science is provided as well. Forensic science courses are designed to provide both classroom and laboratory exposure to the field of criminalistics, toxicology, anthropology, crime scene investigation, and DNA. These core topics are complemented with advanced coursework and laboratory instruction. Emphasizing the development of problem-solving abilities, the curriculum encourages concentration in at least one forensic science specialty area and exposes students to both relevant laboratory techniques and medico-legal developments.
The program maintains strong ties with accredited forensic laboratories in both the private and public sectors. Students are required to complete an internship in a forensic laboratory, complete an independent research project, and demonstrate good oral and written skills that will prepare them for future success in both the laboratory and in the courtroom.
The MSFS Program offers hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art facility. The program is housed in the Chemistry and Forensic Science Building, located centrally on campus. Our laboratories have analytical instrumentation and equipment that are commonly found in crime laboratories, including:
Working with tools of the trade will prepare you for a successful career in a public- or private-sector forensic science laboratory.
